Frequently asked questions
Which languages are there?
You see every question in German – as in the test – and your language beneath it: English, Arabic, Ukrainian, Russian, Turkish, Persian (Dari), Romanian, Albanian, Bosnian/Croatian/Serbian, Bulgarian, Polish, Italian, Greek, Spanish, French, Vietnamese, Hindi, Urdu, Chinese (Simplified) and Portuguese.
You choose the translation language in the app (Profile › Settings › Language). It is independent of your device language. The app's interface follows the language of iOS. You change it under Profile › Settings › Change app language.
The test itself is in German only. The translation is a help: you can switch it off or show it only when you need it. In the practice exam it is off by default.
How does readiness work?
Readiness is an estimate from your own answers – not a guarantee. It works like this: for every question the app estimates how likely you are to answer it correctly now, based on how you answered and how long ago that was. Then it plays through very many random practice exams (30 general questions and 3 from your federal state) and counts how often you reach the pass mark you chose (17 or 15).
- You see readiness only after 50 answered questions. Before that, Hedi shows a progress bar and never an invented number.
- A correct answer given with the translation showing counts for less here, because the test is in German only.
- Even with a high value it says "Almost" until you have passed a practice exam without translation in the last 14 days. Only then does it say "Ready".
- The number does not say how likely you are to pass the real test. Nerves, time pressure and the exact questions on your test day are beyond what any app can predict.
How is the test set up?
The naturalisation test has 33 questions: 30 from the 300 general questions and 3 from the 10 questions of your federal state. You have 60 minutes. You need 17 correct answers to pass. The test at the end of the integration course ("Leben in Deutschland") has the same format. There, 15 correct answers are enough for the course test; with 17 you also meet the requirement for naturalisation. The test is written on paper and in German only.
Hedi's practice exam follows this format. The real exam sheets are not published, so the app draws the questions at random. You choose which pass mark counts for you under Profile › Settings › Test type. For binding information on dates, fees and exemptions, ask the authority responsible. A summary with a link is in the app under Profile › About the test.
How do I move my progress to a new device?
With an export file (without iCloud, or for a copy of your own):
- On the old device, open Profile › Settings › Your data and tap "Export progress".
- Save the file with the share sheet, for example to Files or by AirDrop.
- Install Hedi on the new device and bring the file there.
- Open the same place, tap "Import progress" and choose the file.
- Confirm with "Replace my progress". Answers, exams, flashcards, bookmarks, streak and settings are back.
Note: the import replaces the progress on the device where you run it. If you set up a new device from a backup (iCloud Backup or computer), your progress may come across that way too – the system does that.
How do I report a mistake in a question or explanation?
Every question has "Report a problem" (on the practice screen and in the question catalogue). It opens a prepared email to support with the question ID, catalogue version, question text, app version and language. We check every report against the question catalogue. The email is sent only when you send it yourself.
How reliable are the answers?
All 460 questions and answer options are in the app as published in the Gesamtfragenkatalog (version of 7 May 2025). We compared the answer key with the Federal Office's online test centre; the date of that check is in the app under Profile › About this app. For every explanation the app names its sources. A mistake can still slip in: if you find one, please report it.
Why can the answer to some questions change in real life?
For a few questions the answer depends on people or numbers that change, for example the Federal Chancellor or the Federal President. In the test the answer of the question catalogue at its stated version counts. For such questions the app shows a note. If the catalogue changes, an app update is planned.
Does Hedi work without internet?
Yes. Everything you need for studying is inside the app. The app makes only one network request of its own, the ad attribution check on first launch. It is described exactly in the privacy policy.
Purchase, re-download and refunds
Hedi is a one-off purchase with no subscription. Purchases, re-downloads and refunds go through Apple: to download the app again, find your purchase in the App Store under your profile picture › Purchased. You request a refund from Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. We do not see your payment details.
Listen mode sounds flat, or I cannot hear the translation.
Hedi reads aloud with the voices on your device. If only the compact German voice is installed, it sounds flat. In iOS Settings you can download a better German voice under Accessibility › Spoken Content › Voices. The translation is read aloud only if your device has a voice for that language.
Who writes the explanations and translations?
Explanations and translations are made with AI assistance; the explanations are fact-checked against primary sources. The texts are original writing for this app; the questions and answers come unchanged from the Gesamtfragenkatalog. The background to each question names its sources too. If something looks wrong or unclear: "Report a problem".
Which devices does Hedi run on?
On iPhone and iPad with iOS or iPadOS 17 or later. One purchase for iPhone and iPad.
Is Hedi an app of the Federal Office (BAMF)?
No. Hedi is an independent study aid. This app is an independent study aid and is not affiliated with the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) or any other authority. The questions come from the published question catalogue (Gesamtfragenkatalog, Annex 1 of the Einbürgerungstestverordnung; version of 7 May 2025). The test is taken in German only. Translations and explanations are unofficial study aids; only the German wording is binding.
