Privacy Policy

Notaula for iPhone, iPad and Mac

Effective 29 September 2026. Applies to Notaula version 1.0 and later, published by Suraj Kumar Giri ("we", "us").

The short version

Notaula does not collect personal data, about you or about your students. There is no account, no sign-in, no server of ours, no analytics, no advertising and no third-party software inside the app. Your gradebook stays on your device. If you turn on iCloud sync, it also goes to your own private iCloud storage, which Apple runs and which we cannot read. The app makes one network request of its own, to Apple, described in full below.

What the app stores on your device

Your gradebookClasses, student names, grades and their history, attendance, rubrics, timetable, lesson plans, seating plans, observations and any student photos you add. Stored in the app's own storage on your device with the operating system's strongest file protection (on iPhone and iPad it cannot be read while the device is locked). Included in your normal device backup, the same way as any app's data. Never sent to us.
SnapshotsCompressed copies of your gradebook, taken daily and before large changes, kept on the device so you can restore. Never sent to us.
The weekly spreadsheetA spreadsheet of every class, saved each week in the Files app on your device, or in iCloud Drive → Notaula when sync is on. It is yours to open, move or delete.
SettingsYour grading scale, name order, lock and sync choices. Stored in the app's local preferences.
An install recordTwo coarse categories, formed once and never recomputed: whether the install came from an Apple Ads campaign, and whether the App Store already had a purchase of this app on your Apple Account (a re-download) or not. No date, no identifier; see below.
A diagnostics summaryOne line of text, such as "0 crash, 0 hang", derived on the device from Apple's MetricKit. Never uploaded by the app.

Deleting the app deletes all of it from that device.

iCloud sync (optional)

Sync is your choice, and you can turn it on or off in Settings. When it is on, your gradebook is stored in your own private iCloud database through Apple's CloudKit, under your Apple Account and counted against your iCloud storage, so that it appears on your other devices. Apple operates that storage under its own privacy policy. It is private to your Apple Account: we, the developer, have no access to it and cannot see, export or delete what is in it. Turning sync off stops it; your data stays on the device.

The one network request of its own

When first opened, Notaula asks Apple's Ad Services framework for an attribution token and sends that token to Apple's endpoint (api-adservices.apple.com). Apple replies with whether this install came from an Apple Ads campaign and, if so, which one. The token is issued by Apple, contains no identifier of yours, and carries nothing about you or your students. If Apple has no answer yet, the app tries again on a later launch, a few times at most, and then stops for good.

We do this to know whether our own advertising brings new customers or re-downloads by people who already own the app. If the install was attributed to an ad, the app also reads the original purchase date from the App Store's own record (StoreKit AppTransaction) on the device and reduces it to one category, "owned before the ad" or "not", before storing it. The date itself is not stored.

Apart from this request and iCloud sync, if you turn it on, the app makes no network requests. It works fully with no connection.

Face ID, Touch ID and passcode lock

If you turn on the lock, the app asks the operating system to confirm it is you. Your face or fingerprint data never reaches the app: the system only tells it yes or no.

Photos

A student photo is added only when you pick one. The app uses the system photo picker, so it sees only the photo you choose, never your library. The photo is stored with the gradebook as described above.

Reports and exports

When you export a report or spreadsheet, the app creates the file and hands it to the system share sheet or file picker. Where it goes from there, such as Mail, AirDrop or Files, is your choice and is handled by the app you choose. Notaula does not send it anywhere.

Crash reports

Notaula does not include a crash-reporting service. If your device is set to share analytics with app developers, Apple may send us aggregated crash logs through App Store Connect under Apple's own privacy terms. That is Apple's setting, and it is off unless you turned it on.

Tracking, advertising and third parties

None. The app does not track you across apps or websites, does not use the advertising identifier, does not ask for App Tracking Transparency permission (because it does not track), and contains no third-party SDKs. Its privacy manifest declares no collected data and no tracking domains, and its App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected".

Students' data, schools and data-protection law

Notaula is a tool for teachers. The data about students is entered by the teacher and stays on the teacher's devices and, with sync on, in the teacher's own iCloud storage. We never receive it, so we are neither a controller nor a processor of it. Whether and how a teacher may keep pupils' data on a personal device is set by their school or education authority; please follow their rules. The app is not directed at children and has no student-facing features.

Your rights

Because we hold no personal data about you or your students, there is nothing for us to access, correct, export or delete on request. What the app stores is on your devices and in your iCloud storage, under your control. If you are in the EU/EEA, the UK, California or anywhere else with a data-protection law, you may write to us at any time; our answer will be that we have no record of you, and we will say so in writing.

Changes

If the app ever starts doing something not described here, this page will be updated first, the effective date above will change, and the App Store privacy label will be updated to match.
